eBay is the worlds largest swap meet, auction and discount superstore. If you take a look on the Internet, there are literally thousands of people making a living by buying and selling on eBay. Some of these people have real world brick and mortar stores and use eBay as a second virtual shop or as a way to liquidate overstock. Other people sell crafts or services, and even more people sell used items they no longer have any use for. But these are not the people who are making the big money, becoming their own bosses, using eBay. They are barely scratching the surface.

Step one - find an item to sell. This will be the hardest part. You can try to find items in the traditional way - contact crafters, search the newspaper, etc - or you can utilize eBay to find items in lots, at low prices, to resell in bulk. This is what I would recommend. Find a large group of items priced low, buy them, and then resell. Doing this, you can easily double or triple your investment.

Step two - research. Scan eBay for your items or similar items. Find out what other people are trying to charge for them, and what other people are paying for them. This will give you an idea of what to charge for your items. If the highest price is $10 each, and the price you paid is $5 each, but the average sale price is $8.50, you should charge $8.25. This does two things: one, you undercut most of the competition which assures you quick and easy sales, and two, you keep the price relative to the competition (and not too low) so as not to make the bidders think your items are stolen, broken or knock-offs of real items.

Step three - design your sales page. You could have a plain text page but that would not inspire people to buy. Your page should look professional, but also have some life to it. Use images of your items - taken by you if possible, stock photography works if you don't have access to a digital camera - as well as text descriptions of the item and its condition. Also, make sure you describe, in detail, every single thing it comes with. For example, if you were selling wireless FM transmitters for MP3 players, that came with a cable to connect to the MP3 player and a carrying case, you should tell the bidder 1) the brand and model of the unit, 2) what it looks like and how it works, and 3) what accessories it comes with. This lets the bidder feel that they are making an informed purchase, no different than if they were using a major retail chain or retail website.

Step four - post your auction. If you want quick sales, you can use the Buy It Now feature to offer them chance to cut right to the chase and get the item they want, or you can avoid auctions all together and just offer them for instant sale. The instant sale way is better when you have a lot of one item and want to get rid of them without the hassle or inconsistency of auctions. Set your Buy It Now or sale price to the amount you determined in step two, and if you are doing an auction set your minimum bid to a little below the amount you want to make for the item. This way, even if the auction goes cheap, you don't lose money, or break even - you still make some profit.

Step five - collect your earnings, and buy more items. The secret to success with eBay sales is that you have to keep reinvesting your profits. If you do it once and keep the small amount of money you made, it will seem like you didn't make anything at all. If you reinvest the earnings, next time you can buy more items, or more expensive items, and make even more money. There is very little money in the single sale but there is lots of money in the long term repeat sales. What started out as a hundred dollar profit on one set of sale can end up as your ticket to quitting your nine to five.
